Spring Cleaning by Renee Cooper

I love spring. Who doesn't? One of the things I love about spring is that I get to clean out my closets and dressers, deep clean my bathrooms and kitchen...throwing myself into that yearly ritual of getting rid of what doesn't fit me or my life any longer in order to make room for the possibility of something different...a new pair of shoes, a new arm chair for the family room...a new life?

Di and I spent the weekend designing our upcoming spring retreat, the theme of which is From Pain to Peace: A Journey of Acceptance. Today it occurred to me that this is a form of spring cleaning as well... removing the internal clutter that's in the way of having the kind of life I want. Because in order to have something different in the future, we need to create room for it to occur, which usually means letting go of something  we've been hanging onto that no longer serves us: blaming our ex, feeling "done to", old angers or hurts or resentments that our life hasn't turned out the way we had planned.

In The Five Things We Cannot Change, David Richo talks about the "givens" of Life:

  1. Everything changes and ends.
  2. Things do not always go according to plan.
  3. Life is not always fair.
  4. Pain is a part of life.
  5. People are not loving and loyal all the time.

When we hold on to our belief that things "should be different" than they are, we suffer. Letting go of the "shoulds" and finding acceptance for these 5 givens is the key to peace. Letting go of the "shoulds" also allows the space for something else to show up... more acceptance, more energy, more hope, more personal power.

So this spring, in addition to cleaning out my closets, I'll also be leading a group of courageous women to clean out their inner lives (and to be sure, I'll be doing some of that "inner cleaning" myself). I hope you can join us for our weekend of Spring Cleaning.

Pages for Your Passport (featuring Renee Senes, CDFA)

To get you thinking about the upcoming Passport series, we have launched a new feature- the Book Review. This entry is courtesy of our colleageue, Renee Senes, CDFA:

Prince charming bookPrince Charming Isn't Coming: How Women Get Smart About Money by Barbara Stanny isn't your usual "how to" book about women and money. At first I almost dismissed it -after all, Barbara opens by telling us she is the daughter of the "R" in H&R Block and by her 21st birthday was already a very wealthy woman. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to learn from someone who grew up with the proverbial silver spoon. However she quickly tells us that she depended upon her father, and later her husband, to manage her money until a devastating financial crisis made her realize she needed to take control.

This book is not hard-core financial advice on bonds, mutual funds and the stock market. It is not about aimed at educating the reader about IPOs, stock mutual funds, IRAs, or even general budgeting techniques. Don't turn to this book for solid information about the world of financial planning and investing.

However, if you, like many of my clients, shy away from financial matters or feel, like the chapter titled "If I'm so smart, why am I so dumb about money?" then this book is for you.It addresses the psychological stumbling blocks that prevent many women from managing their own money and offers practical checklists to guide them toward financial stability. Each chapter has a summary along with exercises and activities.

And, as Barbara points out, "the Prince need not be a man. Our prince could be an insurance settlement, the lottery or anything we fantasize will rescue us financially". The book aims to help women understand their "inner" relationship with money first, so they can develop a healthy financial future.

Renee Senes, CDFA works with clients, and their attorneys, in all states of the divorce process to help them understand the ramifications of the many divorce-related financial decisions they are facing. Her goal is to ensure that they will have sufficient assets, and understand how to manage those assets, for a stable future. Ms. Senes can be contacted at 978-456-9600 or rsenes@investorscapital.com
